THE SHORT SHORT STORY COMPETITION

Announcing an open call for the 2007 National Science Fiction Convention amateur short short story writing competition sponsored by the Australian Science Fiction Foundation.

Cash prizes will be awarded and an additional award will also be offered to the best entry received from a young adult writer, 18 years or younger.

The winners' entries will be published at some future date, either on this website at the author's discretion, or in another publication as appropriate.

THEME

In keeping with Convergence 2007, the competition theme for both the General and Under 18 categories is Young Adult Fiction – the person books built.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

• 1500 words or less

• Open to amateur writers only*

• One entry per person

• Competition is open to non members of Convergence 2 however there will be a $10.00 entry fee for non members.

* For the purposes of this competition an ‘amateur’ is any person who has never had a paid fiction sale. If a story you’ve written has been published without reimbursement, or if your only payment has been through receiving contributor copies, then you still qualify as amateur for this competition. Likewise, non-fiction sales don’t disqualify you as an amateur fiction writer.

WHAT TO SEND US

Disposable manuscripts only. Stories will not  be returned, so please don’t send us the only copy of your story. Please ensure your entry is a legible, printed copy in 12pt., set to double line-spacing. Also, please be sure that you:

• Do include a cover page with your contact details and age if submitting to the Under 18 category

• Do include entry fee if you are not a member of Convergence 2: make cheques or money orders payable to Victorian Science Fiction Conventions.  Paypal is available; contact the Treasurer for details how to pay by Paypal.

• Don’t include your name as a header or footer in the body of the story

Winners will be announced at the Convergence2, the 2007 Australian National SF Convention 8-11 June 2007

The judges of this competition are independent industry professionals appointed by the 2007 Convergence Committee. Submitted stories will have the writer’s name removed before judging. The Convergence Committee permits the judges to reserve the right to decide against awarding a prize in either or both the General or under 18 years categories if no stories of reasonable quality are received
